Sea Change - Larry Taylor
“Sea change or seachange is an idiom for broad transformation drawn from a phrase in the song "Full fathom five" in Shakespeare's The Tempest, and connotes a transformation.” Wikipedia
First Tunisia, then Egypt, Jordan and today Yemen; the dominos are falling. This is a time of sea change in the mideast. There are events or seasons which are bench marks in history, after which everything changes. The assassination of JFK, the advent of the Beatles, the fall of the Berlin wall with the breakup of the USSR, 9/11 and now add to the list Egypt, they are all examples of sea change events.
As I write this I am in Vermont where we are experiencing a winter storm that stretches from Texas to New England bringing new record snow falls and cold temperatures. Global weirding continues. In Australia our dear friends are going through what must be a nightmare as the largest cyclone in their history ravages northern Queensland. The whole earth is shaking. It is sea change time both in the natural and in the heavenlies.
As urgent as it has been over the past years to prophesy “shaking,” it brings no joy to me to see those words coming to pass. For those who are tempted to join in the chorus of voices calling these events the “judgement of God” coming against their pet grievance, it is good to be reminded of Jesus‘ words concerning judgement. Our message as the body of Christ is to echo the words of Jesus, “I did not come into the world to judge the world but to save the world” (John 12:47). When Jesus was told by James and John that He ought to call down fire from heaven and destroy the Samaritan cities that would not receive Him, He rebuked them by saying, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s live, but to save them.” (Luke 9:55)
There is a passage in scripture that gives insight into Jesus’ feelings about events we term “natural disasters”. It is found in Luke 13:
1Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2 And Jesus said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate?
3 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
4 "Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem?
5 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
6 And He began telling this parable: "A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any.
7 "And he said to the vineyard-keeper, 'Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?'
8 "And he answered and said to him, 'Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;
9 and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.'"
The message of this teaching is that we are in a season of grace and mercy in which God’s judgement, in the strict technical sense, is suspended giving time for mankind to repent and follow Him. There is a coming final judgement in which ultimate justice will be administered on all humanity. But we are now in the age of the Gospel of the Kingdom. If we got what we deserved, we would all be destroyed but God’s goodness is now manifested in mercy, forgiveness, and grace through the blood of Jesus Christ.
The individual instances of political, economic or natural turmoil should not be seen as God’s direct judgement on the sins of people, if that were the case, all of humanity would deserve to be destroyed. However, that is not to say that these events have no meaning or significance in God’s unfolding plan. I do believe that these events are “signs of the times.” Jesus clearly said that there would be “wars and rumors of wars...nation will rise against nation...there will be famines and earthquakes.” We were not to view them as “judgement” but “birth pangs.”
Paul picks up the same theme in Romans 8:23 saying that “all of creation groans and suffers with the pain of childbirth.” The birth referred to is the revelation of the sons of God. The earth is subjected “in futility” to the slavery of the sin and death cycle but the children of God are to be the personification of those set free from this cycle into the “freedom of the glory of the children of God.” It is my belief that as with birth pains, the intensity and frequency of these types of catastrophic “sea change” events indicate the nearness of the actual birth--the penultimate sea change in which the Church once again is filled with the glory of God to be seen by all of creation prior to the return of King Jesus to the earth.
It is time for the children of God to emerge in their full redemption revealing the glory of the Father through the light of Jesus Christ. It is the goodness of God that leads men to repentance. We are to be the living walking dispensers of that goodness. In the face of of a world engulfed in the destructive consequences of manifested evil it is time for the Church to arise and shine. In contrast to the increasing darkness, “His glory will be declared to the nations and His wonders among the people.”
When The Glory Comes - Larry Taylor
“When all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord on the temple, they bowed their faces to the ground on the pavement, and worshiped and praised the Lord, saying: ‘For He is good, for His mercy endures forever.” 2 Chronicles 7:3 NKJV
On the day of dedication of the newly completed temple built by King Solomon, the response of the people of God to the amazing revelation of His glory was to prostrate themselves in His presence and begin a chorus of praise that still echos today, “For He is good, For His mercy endures forever.” When His glory was revealed the recognition that came to the people was the overwhelming mercy and goodness of God. 2 Chronicles 7:10 says, “...he sent the people away to their tents, joyful and glad of heart for the good that the Lord had done for David, for Solomon, and for His people of Israel.” There was an immediate ecstatic response to the tangible expression of glory. The people were joyful that a real-world, real-time blessing had come upon them. The visible observable glory of God brings to the forefront of consciousness just how amazing it is that we are allowed to interact with the creator/sustainer of the universe.
God reveals His glory in many ways. His multifaceted, multidimensional, manifold nature, character and power is revealed sovereignly. He choses the time and manner in which He reveals Himself. However, it is significant that on the day of the dedication of Solomon’s temple His glory was revealed in a tangible and dramatic way in response to Solomon’s prayer at the completion of the building project. There is a divine interaction with destiny that encompasses both His will and our response. Obedience and disobedience affect outcomes without violating the sovereignty of the Father. He foreknows, He predestines but He also acts based on our response to His revelation.
I had a conversation several years ago with a pastor concerning the issue of sovereignty as it related to revival. The pastor’s position was that revival was poured out sovereignly without regard to the people of God. While I agreed with the absolute sovereignty of the Father, I couldn’t escape the conclusion that what was really being offered was an excuse for not receiving what the Holy Spirit was already pouring out. As I went away from the conversation I asked the Father for understanding. Specifically I prayed, “what is it Lord, do we pray, press in and receive what you are offering or do you just do it without our involvement?” Immediately word pictures began to form in my head. I heard the Lord say, “when you were a baby your father sovereignly went to work and earned money which he sovereignly gave your mother who sovereignly went to the store and bought milk and sovereignly put it in the refrigerator so that when you cried out in hunger in the night, she sovereignly got up and fed you.”
Solomon obeyed the prophetic revelation that he would build the temple that was in David’s heart. He prayed and sought the Lord when the project was completed and God’s response was to pour out His glory in an awesome display of power and might. The people were overwhelmed with joy at the goodness and mercy of God. The Bible says that the glory of the Father is revealed in the face of Jesus Christ. When we seek Him, we find. He sovereignly preordained our need and His response to our hunger. The interaction that happens as this divine mystery unfolds is transformational. We are lifted out of the limitations of our human existence and confronted with the reality of His unlimited glory.
Global Weirding and Wolves - Larry Taylor
I’ve been watching with interest the news reports about dead birds falling from the sky, unusually large fish kills, extreme weather events like flooding in Australia and severe blizzards in the U.S. and Europe. The term “global warming” doesn’t seem to fit, so I refer to these extreme events as “global weirding.” Our local manifestation of global weirding can be found in our neighborhood coyote population.
It is not unusual to encounter coyotes in Texas, even in urban areas where we live. However, what is unusual is that these coyotes have become very aggressive. The police were called a few nights ago when the pack chased a pizza delivery guy back to his car trying to take the pizza right out of his hands. A day or so later, this same group of coyotes attacked a poodle being walked by it’s owner near her townhouse. What they didn’t achieve with the pizza, they apparently did with the poodle--dinner.
With the coyotes in mind I read this scripture this morning from Acts 20:29: “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.” Paul was warning the Ephesian Church that there were coming those who would subvert the “gospel of grace” that he preached. He compared them to wolves who would savagely try to separate the people and devour them.
Who are the wolves?
The first mention of wolves in the Bible is found in Ezekiel 22:27. The prophet brings the word of the Lord against corrupt Jerusalem where the priests, prophets and princes are compared to wild beast tearing their prey, shedding their blood and destroying their souls all for dishonest gain. The same charge is echoed in Zephaniah 3:3. In Matthew 7:15 Jesus identifies false prophets as those who come in sheep’s clothing but are actually blood thirsty wolves. Jesus warned the twelve and the seventy as they were sent out that they were being sent as “sheep among wolves.” The wolves are identified by their fruit according to Matt. 7:16. In short, wolves are leaders who are out for their own gain at your expense.
What are they trying to do?
In agreement with the enemy, their prototype, they draw you away then disable you destroying your soul in the process all for dishonest gain. Satan comes to steal kill and destroy, so their pattern is the same. They seek to build their own kingdoms by tearing down The Kingdom.
How do you deal with wolves?
Scripture says we are to beware, alert and mindful of these false “leaders.” Our posture is to be as “wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” Warned and aware of the danger we are to “go” according to Luke 10:3 and carry out our biblical mandate to preach and demonstrate the Kingdom. It is important not to “shrink back” or be intimidated by their tactics (2 Tim 1:7). Since the wolves in Paul’s warning are specifically identified as those who would put the people of God back under the law, his word in Galatians 3 would apply, “who has bewitched you?”. Apparently the Galatian believers had already fallen victim to their tactics. We are not to be distracted or diverted by their words. They will seek to move you from grace back under a system of works and law--man’s efforts, accomplishments, plans and procedures--to achieve their true motive, which is to enslave you for their own ego and monetary gain.
The focus of the biblical admonitions is this, you are free so stay free. Carry out the mission the Church has been assigned. Go into all the earth and preach the gospel of the Kingdom with signs, wonders and miracles confirming the Word. Don’t be shut down, distracted, diverted or discouraged by those who seek to manipulate the people of God for their own purposes. It was for freedom you were set free, let no man put the yokes of bondage on your shoulders ever again!
The Great Evaluation - Larry Taylor
"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching onward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Phil 3:13-14
Yes, it’s the time of year for gifts and family fun and the semi annual “EVALUATION.” You know, that ritual of introspection and self-loathing that usually accompanies the Christmas/New Year holiday and your birthday. You can deny it if you like but we all do it. Comparing ourselves to our friends and family members who are doing much better than us. Great job, great kids, great home, lost 150 pounds in two weeks, you know the ones. Reminding ourselves of the goals, dreams and plans that didn’t work out and every financial mistake we’ve ever made. Paint me melancholy, morose and blue.
HOWEVER!, it is really important to remember that you are not the judge of you, or anyone else for that matter. If you are a child of the King, only one opinion matters--The Kings! He calls you His beloved. You have been declared not guilty of every sin. He has promised to take every mistake you have ever made and work it together for your good. You have access to all the riches of His Kingdom. You are now of royal linage. Your inheritance is assured and your outcome is set. Your shortcomings have become the occasion for His empowering presence to be displayed. As you follow Jesus, you always wind up in victory lane.
The final chapter of your story has not yet been written. The final evaluation hasn’t been made. But one thing is already known, Jesus has accepted you based on His goodness not yours. His love is unconditional. You can’t earn His approval because you already have it. If you haven’t already done it, it’s time to break out of introspection and move forward focused on the only perfect one who ever lived, Jesus.
THE TANGIBLE INTANGIBILITY - Larry Taylor
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1
Faith is not merely substantial, it is a substance. Faith defines human reality. Faith is a knowing that comes from the unknown. It is the ability to grasp the essence of the heavenly realm and live in it here and now. Faith is not opposed to reality. It is the capacity to move beyond mere humanity and operate in the realm of the coming reality.
By faith, the Fathers of Faith lived beyond their circumstances, limitations and flaws. Even creation itself had it’s origin in faith--God faith. Abel, Enoch, Noah all were men of faith who transcended the earthly realm to release the will of God in the physical world. The list continues to this day when the Kingdom realm is revealed in the lives of everyday believers walking in fulness of the Spirit. Jesus made the realm accessible, faith releases the realm into our daily lives.
What seems to many as the elusive goal of pleasing God is accomplished by simple faith. It is not just faith that says “He is” that please Him, but faith that believes there is a direct benefit in the here and now physical realm for those who earnestly, persistently, passionately seek His reality.
It is not faith in faith that pleases Him. It is faith in Jesus Christ that releases the tangible hand of God that touches and transforms our lives. Peter and John spoke to the council in at the Temple regarding the healing of the beggar at the gate clearly stating that it was faith in the name of Jesus that made the lame man walk.
Jesus is the ultimate revelation. The Word made flesh. Faith comes by hearing, hearing by The Word of God. When we see, feel and hear Jesus by the work of the Holy Spirit we are interacting with the heavenly realm. When we pray “thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” the expectation that there will be a tangible answer to that request is the faith that releases the reality of the glory realm into the earthly realm and transformation happens.
